About Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare

Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare is an independent, not-for-profit hospital located in St. Paul, Minnesota, with clinics in Duluth, Burnsville, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, and services for adult patients at our St.Paul - Phalen Clinic. Gillette is internationally renowned for a level of pediatric expertise that distinguishes us from many health care organizations.

Since our founding by Dr. Arthur Gillette more than 100 years ago, we've been at the forefront of medical technology, treatment, education, and research for children with disabilities or complex medical needs. Our programs, emphasizing services for infants, toddlers, children, teens and their families, have now been extended to provide a lifetime of care.

We provide specialty care for children with brain injuries from birth through young adulthood. Gillette Children's is a regional referral center serving patients throughout the Upper Midwest and beyond. We provide diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation regardless of whether a child sustains a brain injury at birth, in childhood or as an adolescent.

Our Pediatric Brain Injury Program provides an intensive medical, nursing and rehabilitation program that includes comprehensive care and family support. We specialize in helping children who have had mild to severe brain injuries reach their full potential. We provide treatment on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Infants, children and teens with a brain injury may be transferred to Gillette Children's for inpatient rehabilitation as soon as the child is medically stable

We also provide medical, rehabilitation, equipment and programming evaluations for children and young adults months or even years after an injury as their needs change. Our inpatient rehabilitation unit is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Gillette's Minor Neurotrauma Clinic provides follow-up care to patients who experience mild to moderate neurotrauma injuries, such as a concussion, an intracranial hemorrhage or a skull fracture. We offer infants, children and teens convenient access to post-injury services in one central location. We typically see patients within a few days of the injury, because early services and education can help to prevent complications. Depending on their injuries, patients might need imaging tests, rehabilitation therapy and neuro-psychology services. Nurse practitioners who specialize in neurosurgery and rehabilitation provide initial evaluations for Minor Neurotrauma Clinic patients. They work with other staff, including pediatric neurosurgeons and pediatric rehabilitation medicine physicians. Together, the team educates patients and their families about post-injury symptoms and recommends when patients may safely return to activities.

Community Work and Involvement

Gillette Children's is in the process of developing a plan to offer baseline ImPACT testing to youth athletic groups in our community.

On an annual basis, Gillette Children's organizes a retreat for brain injured patients and their families.

ImPACT History:

I was trained, on November 30, 2007, I have administered ImPACT 282 times to 90 children and adolescents. Forty-three of these children have been cleared to return to full contact activity. Ten children have been cleared for heavy levels of activity, but not for full contact. I am continuing to follow 30 children, most will be cleared for activity soon. Twenty-four of these children have been referred on for more comprehensive neuropsychology testing.

We have written a research protocol and submitted IRB applications to begin to analyze the characteristics of the children evaluated in our Minor Neurotrauma Clinic.
