Concussion Center North Atlanta
About Concussion Center North Atlanta
Mark Brown, MD, FAAP, is a board certified pediatrician with over 25 years experience in general and emergency room pediatrics along with 16 years experience in sports medicine including being the team doctor for a 4-time state football champion in Florida and helping initiate the sports medicine program at Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell, Georgia. In his Emergency Room work Dr. Brown was impressed by the number of youth and teen concussions he saw, and began investigating how best to treat these patients. After preparing for a year, he was designated a “Credentialed ImPACT Consultant,” by the ImPACT Concussion Management faculty associated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, widely recognized as one of the world leaders in concussion research and therapy. After completing his training, Dr Brown established the Concussion Center of North Atlanta.
Presently there are only 4 clinics in the Atlanta area that offer this expertise. Along with Dr Brown’s Concussion Center North Atlanta, there is the Concussion Center of Georgia in Gwinnett along with the sports medicine programs of Emory and CHOA downtown. Thus with the “Concussion Center North Atlanta” serving the population of the north/northwest Atlanta suburbs from its location in Marietta, Georgia, the geographic whole of metro Atlanta is now covered by ImPACT consultants.
Dr. Brown will evaluate each patient thoroughly including ImPACT testing, then design an individual treatment program working with the coaches, teachers, and school personnel to assure the best environment for the well being of his patients. He will supervise various types of therapy including progressive physical therapy and, when indicated, specialized treatments such as vestibular therapy to aid in recovery. Medications will be used in a few cases in which recovery is not complete after an appropriate amount of time.
Dr. Brown is currently the concussion consultant for Kennesaw State University athletics and working with Wellstar Health System to initiate baseline ImPACT testing for the contact sports in the 16 high schools of Cobb County, Georgia. He is hoping to eventually extend this to the additional 14 high schools in Paulding, Bartow, Cherokee, and Douglas counties. Dr. Brown works continually to educate trainers, coaches, players, and parents the proper way to diagnose and treat concussions.
