About Robert J. Dunkle, PhD

Robert J. Dunkle, Ph.D. (Jay) is a trained Clinical Neuropsychologist and has worked at Neuropsychological Services of Westchester (NSW) for 15 years. Dr. Dunkle is a licensed Psychologist in New York State. NSW is a private group practice providing outpatient services for those overcoming brain related problems such as traumatic or acquired brain injury and developmental learning disabilities. The approach is based on a comprehensive and coordinated integration of diagnostic testing and rehabilitation or remediation treatment programs. Whether the problem is a result of a developmental condition or an acquired injury to the brain, mental function can be assessed and treated in people of all ages. NSW works with children as young as first grade and adults throughout the life cycle.

At NSW Dr. Dunkle performs neuropsychological assessments as well as teaching stress management techniques with Biofeedback to individual patients and providing cognitive rehabilitation for brain injured clients. Dr. Dunkle is knowledgeable in sports related injuries and specializes in the management and treatment of sports concussions. Dr. Dunkle also teaches children remedial strategies for learning difficulties, and specializes in providing psychotherapy for men who have sustained brain injuries.

Dr. Dunkle received his degree in Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology, and completed his pre-doctoral training at North Shore Children’s Hospital in Salem, Massachusetts. While at North Shore Children’s Hospital Dr. Dunkle received training in the Behavioral Medicine Outpatient Department, as well as in conducting neuropsychological evaluations and in the diagnosis of learning disabilities and brain related disorders in the Neurodevelopmental Center. His dissertation research focused on Memory Disorders with Children Diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects. Dr. Dunkle joined NSW in 1996 and completed his postdoctoral training at NSW and at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College.


Community Work and Involvement

Dr. Dunkle is a member of the New York State Psychological Association, as well as The Society for Cognitive Rehabilitation, The National Academy of Neuropsychology, New York State Association of Neuropsychology, and New York School Public High School Athletic Association – Sports Concussion Management Team. In addition, Dr. Dunkle co-facilitates a support group for traumatic brain injury survivors at the Westchester Brain Injury Association Chapter and is Chairman of the Westchester Chapter.


ImPACT History:

Presently, Dr. Dunkle is in the process of establishing a sports concussion program at the high school and college level as well as meeting with 'weekend warrior' groups. This process has involved meetings with local schools' athletic directors, athletic trainers, and coaches as well as parents and athletes, in order to educate them about the effects of sports related concussions and to help in establishing a management system that would best suit the athlete in returning to play. In addition, this program is set up to assist athletic directors, coaching staff, team physicians, and athletic trainers in making accurate and informed decisions about their players. Likewise, Dr. Dunkle is a member of the New York School Public High School Athletic Association – Sports Concussion Management Team and has lectured around the state on sports concussion.
