Concussions are one of the most serious sports related injuries, and are often one of the most difficult to diagnose. A local school district, however, is taking these injuries very seriously and hoping to prevent them.
In the 2009 school year, there were 18 confirmed concussions suffered by Hardin County student athletes. In an effort to lower that number and increase student safety, the Hardin County Board of Education approved the ImPACT Concussion Management testing program for all of their high school athletes.
As of July 15, 2010, it is now mandatory for all Hardin County High School athletes take a concussion screen test before their season even starts. An additional test is required after an athlete is sidelined for any head trauma related injury.
The Hardin County School District has teamed up with Hardin Memorial Hospital to administer these tests, which can be done in the school computer labs and takes approximately 30 minutes to administer per student.
Hardin Memorial Hospital has offered to support the district in the implementation of this program at 50% of the cost for the 2010 school year, and 25% of the cost for the 2011 school year. The total cost of testing 1800 students in 2010 is $2,250, but the cost for the Hardin School District will be $1125.
Jerry Wyman, the director of athletics for JCPS, expressed interest in finding out more about this program.
